Pharmacy and Meds by Mail

Educational information only, not medical, legal, or insurance advice. Confirm with CHAMPVA and your provider. Last checked against VA sources: October 9, 2026.

Retail pharmacies (OptumRx network)

Fill urgent and regular prescriptions at any pharmacy in the OptumRx network, which includes most local pharmacies. Bring your OptumRx prescription card (you can print a temporary one from OptumRx’s site). CHAMPVA is not TRICARE, which matters if the pharmacy has trouble billing.

If CHAMPVA is your only coverage: you pay the full price until you meet the yearly deductible, then 25% of the allowable amount.

If you go outside the network: pay in full, then file a claim; VA reimburses 75% of the allowable amount.

If you have another drug plan: it pays first and CHAMPVA second. Tell the pharmacy about both; if both cover the drug, you may owe nothing.

Meds by Mail

Meds by Mail delivers non-urgent, ongoing medications to your home at no cost: no deductible, no copay. You can use it only if you have no other prescription coverage (including Medicare Part D).

GLP-1 medications

VA now covers GLP-1 drugs only for FDA-approved uses (for example, type 2 diabetes), not for weight loss. Check VA’s CHAMPVA care page for the current list.
